Canceling a credit card is more than just cutting it up with a pair of scissors. I remember the first time I canceled a credit card. It dropped my credit score by some points. The reason was because the credit card was not cancelled the right way. So, how do you cancel a Chase credit card?
To avoid disrupting your credit history, a Chase credit card can be cancelled in three ways. You go in person at the bank, on the website or just call the Chase card cancellation number. Any one of these ensures you follow the bank’s policy on card cancellation.
Prior to doing this though, I want you to ensure all credit card debt has been paid off. Not just your card debt, but also any pending charges. This includes the monthly fee for the credit card. Oh yes- some credit card companies charge maintenance fees. I talked about this on 5 Outrageous Hidden Fees Your Credit Card Charges.
In fact, it was how I got penalized for closing a credit card. I did not know I had a fee due after the card closure. Hence, the importance of making sure all fees and debts are handled before you decide to close the Chase credit card.
How To Cancel Chase Credit Card
Here is how I want you to go about Chase credit card cancellation. This is so you avoid repercussions which will affect your credit.
1. Cancel Chase Credit Card Online
You can cancel Chase credit card online. This is as long as you have access to your Chase bank account. There are two ways you can go about it. You can either do it through the Chase website or the app.
Which one is convenient for you, my dear reader?
If it is the Chase website, just login to your account page. Try to find Chase secure message feature. Then, write to Chase telling them you want to close a credit card. They will get back to you or help you cancel it.
Alternatively, you can cancel Chase credit card on the app. Here is what I want you to do below:
- Login into the Chase mobile app
- Tap on the profile icon on the top right corner
- Scroll down until you see Secure Message center. Tap the drop down arrow and select “I have a question about one of my accounts”.
- Choose the account. In this case, this would be your Chase credit card account number.
- Then, write a message saying you want to your Chase credit card account closed. And, submit the message if nothing else is required of you.
Once approved, Chase will send you a message saying your Chase credit card account has been closed. As I previously mentioned, I encourage you check your account to make sure you do not have any pending transactions or credit card debts. Or else, closing your credit card will impact your credit history negatively.
2. Chase Card Cancellation By Phone Call
There is a Chase card cancellation number you can call in case your credit card is lost or stolen. It is 1-800-955-9060. In case the credit card is a business credit card, Chase wants you to call 1–888–269–8690. This is because the number is for business credit card customers.
My good reader, do you see the number on the back of your credit card?
You can call it too. Chase card support care will help you out. As with all credit card cancellation requests, you will be asked questions used to identify your account. Be ready to provide your name, address with zip code and account number.
3. Close Chase Credit Card Through Mail
Personally, this one takes the most time. This is because it requires you to write a letter to Chase card services. As a result, the Chase credit card cancellation timeline will depend on whenever your letter is received by the department.
You will agree with me, this is not an option for anyone who wants to cancel his or her credit card as soon as possible. In case you decide to go through this method though, I want you to mail your letter to the following address below:
Chase Card Services
P.O. Box 15298
Wilmington, DE 19850
The above address is the address Chase website has listed for correspondence purposes. By correspondence purposes, I meant issues like card closure or disputing credit card charge at Chase. Therefore, be sure not to include sensitive information like your social security. Just account number, name, address and a message about closing Chase credit card account.
On the whole, the above three ways are how I recommend you close your credit card at Chase. It is not hard to close a Chase credit card. As I stressed before, be sure no debts or fees are owed prior to cancellation. This is so as not to negatively impact your credit.
Does Closing A Chase Credit Card Hurt Your Credit?
It depends on whether you have an outstanding balance on the credit card. If yes, then closing a Chase credit card will hurt your credit. Otherwise, you have nothing to worry about.
I highly encourage you to pay off any credit card balance before you attempt to cancel. I cannot stress the importance of this. The best practice is to pay off credit card balance, then wait for three to five business days before canceling a Chase credit card.
My logic behind this, is to give ample time for transactions to go through. I had been in a situation where my credit balance looked cleared, until a transaction which took a few days to post showed up after card cancellation. The crazy part of it, was I did not even know until my credit score dropped by 60 points.
Oh yes- closing any credit card without clearing your balances could hurt your credit. Be sure to confirm with Chase before proceeding. The bank can see pending transactions, which you may not be able to see on your end.
Alternatives To Cancelling Your Chase Card
Is it better to cancel a credit card or just stop using it, my good reader?
I would cancel a credit, if there are monthly fees associated with having it. Luckily for you, Chase credit card does not charge annual fees for its credit cards. So, you can decide to keep it until it expires on its own. This is especially, when you may need it in the future.
Additionally, you can just stop using your Chase credit card rather than cancelling it. Just store it away in a safe place. It helps to remove automated payments from the card first, so the card does not incur monthly debts due to reoccurring monthly expenditures.
Lastly, you can freeze your card. What this does, is it prevents the credit card from being used for transactions. This one works well, because I have used it to curb my expenditures on an American Express card. So, you can freeze your card as an alternative to cancelling your Chase card.
To conclude this article, it is not hard to close Chase credit card. You can either do it through the phone, mail or online. As long as you have paid off the credit card balance, a Chase credit card cancellation should not impact your credit negatively.
