Opening A Chase Checking Account: A Complete Guide

Chase bank offers checking accounts which are tailored to meet the financial needs of its customers. Whether you are a student or a working adult, Chase has five checking accounts for you to select from. The best part of these choices, is opening a chase checking account is very easy.

Chase checking accounts for its adult customers include:

  • Chase Total Checking
  • Chase Secure Banking
  • Chase Premier Plus Checking
  • Chase Sapphire Banking
  • Chase Private Client Checking

The first three are considered everyday checking accounts, while the last two are classified as premier accounts. Each of this checking account comes with pros and cons. I will leave you to be the judge of which one you want for your financial needs.

What Is the Best Checking Account For Chase

I will write the details of each checking account below with its cons and pros. You can decide which is the best Chase checking account to have.

Everyday Chase Checking Accounts

What is a Chase everyday checking account?

It is a checking account which you can use for your usual daily transactions. There are three of them. Namely: Chase Total Checking, Chase Secure Banking and Chase Premier Plus Checking accounts. Here are what to know about these three accounts.

To open a checking account at Chase for every day use, bear in mind only Chase Premier Plus Checking SM account generates interest. The other two in the category do not, although they have their own benefits.

Chase Premier Accounts

The other two Chase premier accounts include the Chase Sapphire SM Banking and the Chase Private Client Checking SM. Here are what to know about them.

There are fees for having Chase checking accounts. These are called monthly service fees. Besides the Chase Secure Banking SM account, the other accounts can have their monthly service fees waived. Let me elaborate for you.

Chase Checking Account Fee Waive

There is no Chase account that has no monthly fee. Chase monthly service fee occurs once in a statement period. You can avoid the monthly service fees on Chase checking accounts by doing the following:

Chase Checking Account TypeMonthly Service Fee Waive Requirement
Chase Premier Plus Checking SMNo monthly fee, when you have a chase mortgage with monthly payment connected to a Chase account. Also, you will exempt from the fee when you are in the military. Otherwise, maintain an average beginning day balance of
$15,000 or more in the account or any Chase account.
Chase Total Checking ®You have to maintain a balance of $1500 per day in a statement period. Or, have a payment of $500 made into the account. Or, maintain an average beginning day balance of $5,000 or more in the account or any Chase account.
Chase Secure Banking SMThe monthly fee cannot be waived. It is a fixed $4.95 per month.
Chase Sapphire SM BankingMaintain a balance of $75,000 or more in the account or any other Chase account.
Chase Private Client Checking SMMaintain a balance of $150,000 or more in the account or any other Chase account. If not, then a linked Chase Platinum Business CheckingSM account can suffice.

The above balances are the minimum balance to avoid fees at Chase bank. By fees, I refer to monthly service fees, since they may be other miscellaneous fees like overdraft or ATM fees. All these waive requirements do not have to be daily.

It is all within a statement period. A statement period can be one monthly long or more. Bear that in mind, when opening a checking account at Chase bank.

Requirements To Open A Checking Account At Chase Bank

Opening a Chase checking account requires you bring some documents with you to show you are qualified to have a bank account. By being qualified here, I refer to being an adult and a United States citizen or permanent resident.

Having said this, here are what you need to open a checking account at Chase.

  • A legal form of identification. Your national passport, driver’s license, United States international passport, social security card or birth certificate will suffice.
  • Proof of residence. You can use your utility bill, mortgage or any bank statement for this part.

As you can see from the tables comparing all the Chase checking accounts, you do not need a minimum deposit to open a checking account at chase. The above mentioned, are the minimum requirements for a checking account at Chase bank. As long as you have them, just go to a location and open an account at Chase.

Chase Checking Accounts For Kids, High School and College Students

Lastly, Chase bank has three checking accounts for students in high school and college. They are Chase High School Checking SM and Chase College Checking SM. While the first is for high school students within the age bracket of 13 to 17, the Chase College Checking account is for students within the age of 17 to 24 years.

Opening a student checking account at chase requires proof of being either a high school student or a college student. This is because these are for students only. While you are a student, you will not have a monthly service charge for up to five years for the college student, or the duration of being in high school.

If you are already a working adult, you need not to concern yourself with these two accounts. This is because you will not qualify for them. Any one of the previously mentioned five Chase checking accounts will meet your financial needs.
