Does Kroger Cash Checks? – Fees, Limits & Hours

Published On August 31, 2026 //  by Chimé N.U |Last Updated: August 31, 2026 Editorial Disclosure: This article may contain affiliate links. WeeklyBagel may earn a commission at no cost to you. I only recommend products I believe in or that will simplify the lives of my readers

Does Kroger Cash Checks?

I have always said, the best way to cash a check is from a retail store. This is because we can walk in and walk out with a cash for checks. The other option, check cashing apps, may or may not release funds the same day after deposit. Hence, why Kroger check cashing policy is one of those stores worth mentioning.

So, does Kroger cash checks?

Oh yes, Kroger is one of the stores that will instantly cash checks for you. In fact, it is actually one of my favorites when I do not feel like going to my bank. Or, depositing on a check cashing app while waiting for a day to seven business days for the whole check fund to be released to me.

Before I walk you through Kroger check cashing service, I want you to know not all States in the United States have Kroger. Kroger has locations in sixteen states alone. Mostly in the Southern and Mid-western parts of the United States.

I want you to check below to see whether your State is amongst the States with a store location. That way, you are saving yourself some time rather than reading through my article. I know, I hate wasting my time.

LouisianaKentuckyIndianaIllinois
GeorgiaAlabamaArkansasMichigan
MissouriMississippiOhioSouth Carolina
Texas (Yay, my state)TennesseVirginiaWest Virginia

The above states have Kroger locations in their cities or towns. If your state is not amongst them, then maybe you need to read Walmart checking article. This is because Walmart covers more states. Having said that, here is what I want you to know about cashing a check at Kroger.

What Types Of Checks Will Kroger Cash?

You can cash a check at a Kroger store, but it has to be the right type of check. Kroger does not cash just about any kind of checks. The following checks below, is what the store will cash for us.

  • Insurance settlement checks
  • Payroll check
  • Income tax refund
  • Business checks
  • Debit card cashing
  • Government checks

The above checks are what we could take to Kroger for cashing. Having mentioned that, does Kroger cash personal checks?

Forget about personal checks or handwritten ones. Kroger considers them high risk, hence why it will not cash them. If you need to cash a personal check, Walmart cashes two-party checks. I talked about it in the latter blue highlighted article.

Finally, Kroger will cash a bank check. This is a preprinted check by banks, whose payout is guaranteed by the issuing bank. With respect to money orders, Kroger will only cash Kroger money orders.

What You Need For Kroger Check Cashing

Like every other money services in the United States, I advise you go with your ID. I do not know if you have observed, but when it comes to money transactions involving checks, a legal form of ID is a must. Oh yes, as it is with banks, so is it with Kroger and its varying locations.

So, what kind of ID do you need to take with you?

Any form of ID issued by federal, military or state government. This is in addition to your social security or Tax identification number. With respect to the ID, I want you to take one of the following below with you.

  • US-issued Passport
  • State-issued ID
  • Driver’s License
  • Resident Alien ID
  • Military ID
  • Matricula Consular ID
  • Tribal Nation or Reservation ID

The above is what Kroger check cashing policy demands. If you are an international resident, I would say to take your foreign passport with you. It is all about making sure you were meant to cash the cash. I feel like any legal ID with a name that matches the name on the check will do.

How Much Does Kroger Charge To Cash Checks?

Does Kroger charge cashing fees, my good reader?

Unlike the check cashing apps I mentioned earlier, Kroger will charge you a fee. Yes I know, I like cashing checks for free. But do not worry, the fee is not as much.

Kroger charges $3 to $5 for check values under $2000. If you are trying deposit more than that, you will be charged $5 to $7. These amounts are not consistent. It differs from store to store.

This is why I recommend calling a store location first before heading out. That way, you have an idea of Kroger check cashing fee. If you are looking to cash checks for free, you can read my guide: where to cash a check for free.

I talked about other places which could cash your check for free on the guide above. Speaking of fees anyways, Kroger has limits on its check deposit too. Here is what I want you to know about it below.

Kroger Check Cashing Limit

The maximum check cashing at Kroger is $5000. It is the most you can cash out in some locations. You can get more than $5000, but only during tax season. We can deposit up to $7500 worth of check.

Just know depositing a check of that amount, will cost you somewhere between $5 to $7. It depends on the store location. As I previously mentioned, call before heading out.

Kroger Money Services Hours

So, what time does Kroger stop cashing checks?

Kroger check cashing hours depend on the hours of operations of each individual store location. Not all store locations have the same opening and closing time. Some locations in some states close at 11pm, while others close at 10pm.

But, one thing is notable.

They all operate from all week long. That is from Monday through Sunday. If I were you, I would go from 9am through 6pm. This is what I consider business hours, but some stores open at 6am stay open till 11pm.

Does Kroger Cash Check On Sunday?

Kroger money Services is open on a Sunday. You can walk in and try to cash a check. This is one thing I like about using stores to cash a check, despite the fees they charge.

Anyways, there are other places where you can check a check on a Sunday. This is just in case you want other options. I walked you through seven other nationwide stores that will cash your check on a Sunday.

Why Will Kroger Not Cash My Check?

Kroger will not cash your check, when you are trying to deposit a check with a value more than $5000. Unless it is during tax season, it will not be cashed. Do you remember what I said about tax season?

Additionally, we are not able to deposit personal checks with the store. Kroger will reject checks not made out to us. Simply put, checks which do not have our names on it.

Usually, the store will always explain why they will not cash your check. This is especially, when Kroger check cashing policy is violated. You would not know, until you have gone to deposit a check and it got rejected.

But, here is what I would advise to you.

Be sure the check you take with you to Kroger, is not a fake check. Also, it is made to you. Not only made to you, but you have endorsed the back of the check.

Do you know what it means to endorse a check?

It means you are authorized to cash the check. If you turn the back of most checks, it has an endorsement areas which requires to your signature to authorize you to cash it. This is even if the check bears your name, because no financial institution will cash a check which is not endorsed by the person the check is paid to.

This is all I want you to know about Kroger check cashing policy. Kroger will cash your check, when you follow all I have said here. Otherwise, they will reject your check.
