Does Speedway Sell Money Orders?

Does Speedway Sell Money Orders?

Last week in the small town of Harlingen where I was doing a contract work, I could not get the local bank to sell me a money order. According to the bank, I do not have an account with them. I needed the money order so badly, I had to try my luck with Speedway.

Guess what I did not know?

Speedway sells money orders. In fact, it is one of many gas stations that sell money orders. With more than 3800 stores nationwide in the United States, most of the Speedway locations have money orders. You can simply walk in there with a legal form of identification and cash to purchase one.

So, what kind of money order does Speedway sell?

Speedway sells MoneyGram money order. You can buy from Speedway, but you cannot cash money orders from it. The business does not cash them in any of their locations. I would recommend going to a bank to do it.

In addition to this, Speedway does not take credit card payment for its MoneyGram. It will accept cash payments to sell you money orders. So, be sure to take the amount you want to purchase in cash.

Speedway Money Order Cost

Getting a money order from Speedway will cost you about $1.59 in most locations. This is cheap, when compared to places that sell money orders. This transaction fee is expected to be paid in cash. Speedway will not take credit card payment for its MoneyGram transaction cost.

I highly recommend calling a location before heading out. This is because not all Speedway locations sell money orders. Doing this will save time and fuel.

Speedway Money Order Limit

I wanted to purchase about $1300 worth of money orders, but I was told money orders at Speedway has a monetary limit of $500. This amount is the maximum monetary limit you can get from per money order. I found you could by pass this limit and get more.

Here is what I mean.

You can purchase multiple money orders whose total amount is greater than $500. That is exactly what I did. I got three money orders that day.

Now, the total Speedway money order limit per day is $1900. You cannot perform transactions greater than this amount. So, be sure to keep it under $1900.

Also, I forgot to mention buying multiple money orders has its downside. I had to pay $1.59 fee per money order purchased. I know $1.59 sounds like a small amount, but I feel like it is not necessary. If you could get away with just one time for a single money order, it would be nice.

Finally, Speedway will only accept cash payment for its money order transaction. It will not accept cashier’s check or credit card as fee payments. Be sure to take some cash with you to avoid transaction inconvenience.

Filling Out A Money Order From SpeedWay

Filling out a money order from speedway is easy. At least, I thought it was. This is because the order is self-explanatory. If you could read, it instructs you on what to fill per line.

A typical MoneyGram money order, which Speedway sells has three parts to it. Namely:

  • Pay To the Order of
  • Purchaser, Signature For Drawer
  • Address

The “Pay To the Order Of” line is where you enter the recipient’s name. Make sure the name you put here is exactly the same as the name on the receiver’s legal form of identification. This is to avoid inconvenience, when it is time for him or her to cash the MoneyGram money order.

Next, the purchaser’s line is for you to sign your legal signature. This is the same signature as your signature in your legal documents. You can include a legal name too.

Finally, the address line should include the address of the receiver. I know it does not specify whose address to put there, but put the address of the receiver anyways. It should include the street name and number, city, state and zip code of the recipient.

Be sure to verify all the needed data before separating the money order from the receipt. This is to prevent cashing issues. The reason why Speedway asks for these information, is to make sure the money goes to the right person. There will be delay in cashing the MoneyGram money order, if you entered wrong information.

Speedway Money Order Hours

Speedway runs a 24 hour business operation. However, its money order hours may differ from store location to store location. I recommend you call a location first, before heading out to buy a money order.

In all, this is all you need to know about buying a money order from Speedway. If you are looking for other places to get a money order, check out my guide: 8 Best Places To Get A Money Order. I talked about where I usually get my money order and the fees they charge.

This is especially, when you are looking to purchase more than the $1900 maximum offered by Speedway. Some of these money order places allow you to get up to $3000 or more in money order. Be sure to check them out.
