The Cost Of Mint Mobile International Calls

The Cost Of Mint Mobile International Calls

Recently, I was charged $122 for an international call I made to my parents through Spectrum. I only discovered about this charge after my debit card got declined at a gas station. This is because Spectrum immediately deducted the amount after the long call home to my loved ones. If you are going to have Mint mobile international calling plan, I figured you would learn everything before you go for it.

That way, you do not make the mistake I did. So, how did I end up with a hefty $122 bill for an international call on Spectrum, my good reader?

Well, I got sweet-talked into it. I know it sounds cliché but I was subtly swayed into switching from my beloved Cricket to Spectrum. Cricket used to give me a $15 international add-on which lets me talk to my family and friends abroad for hours. Until a Spectrum salesperson claimed to match the same rate with home wifi added at a lower cost.

She claimed the international calls were free. Not once did she mention, it was temporary. I am not going to lie, it was a great deal. I was paying $45 for home wifi and cellphone bills. Hence, why I got hooked.

The thing I missed was this offer was only for a year. Simply put, the original cost of home wifi and cellphone will be charged after one year. I supposed the discount period was over and I was charged $122 for making international calls to my parents.

In all, I end up paying a cost for the temporary pleasure of having these discounts. Now, how does Mint mobile international calls factor into this?

Mint international calls rival the big network international call rates. This includes the likes of Spectrum, AT&T or Verizon. You can make international calls while in the States and outside of the country. Mint has two plans called international calls and Mint international roaming.

People usually confuse the two. So, I will explain the difference between the two before I jump into this article.

Difference Between Mint International Calling and International Roaming

As I previously mentioned above, Mint International roaming is what lets you use your phone in other countries. It is also called Minternational Pass. I talked about it in great detail on 4 Best Mint Mobile International Plans You Need For Travel. An article I wrote about young working class adults who enjoy using their phones abroad without incurring huge fees.

You get to use the international roaming, whenever you are abroad. Having it as an add-on in the US, will not enable international calls. You have to be outside of the US to use the International roaming.

So, what is the Mint mobile international calls?

Mint International call allows you to make calls abroad while you are still in the United States. It is like me calling my parents abroad. The cost of Mint mobile international calls are cheaper and meant for young working class American adults like me who have family and some friends abroad.

Having said that, here is what I want you to know about the Mint mobile international calls.

Mint Mobile International Call Rates

The Mint mobile international calling rates vary from country to country. What you pay for France, may be different from what you pay for calling Ghana. You will be charged higher to call Ghana than France.

Let me elaborate.

Mint mobile will charge $0.11/min for mobile and $0.01/min for land international calls to France. The same international call to Ghana is $0.27/min for mobile and $0.14/min for land international calls. I do not know why calls to Ghana is higher though.

But, you can check out the Mint mobile international call charges for over 160 countries. You just have to put in the country you want to call to be able to see the cost of it. As I previously mentioned, international call cost to other countries varies.

How Do I Make International Calls With Mint Mobile?

Firstly, you need to add money to your Mint mobile wallet. This can be done through the app or the mint mobile website. Here is what I mean.

On the app, do the following below.

  • Login into the app.
  • Tap on Menu.
  • Scroll down until you see Payment, tap on it. Then, select Add Money to Wallet. And, money will be added to your wallet.

To add money through the Mint mobile website, do the following below:

  • Login to the website – Mintmobile.com.
  • Click on Menu, then click on Load Wallet. You can add the amount you want.

As long as you have money on your mint mobile wallet, you can make international calls. But, you just do not make it without the following steps below.

  • Dial 011 plus the code of the country you want to call and the number. For example: If I were to call France, I would dial 01133 and the phone number. The last digits- 33, is the French’s international call code. Do you understand now, my dear reader?

So, it is going to be 011 + code of country + phone number. The same goes with international texting, which is unlimited with Mint mobile. If it is outside of North America, I would include 011, then country’s code and person’s phone number. If you are trying to make a call using Mint mobile outside of the United States, I recommend reading How Mint Mobile International Roaming Works.

Does Mint Offer Free International Calls?

Mint mobile offers international calls to about 180 countries. However, its free calls are only offered to countries in North America. What do I mean by this, my dear reader?

Mint mobile offers free international calls to Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The rest of the world has to pay a little fee to access its international calls. I know- I know this is not what you were looking for, but it is not that bad at all.

I would still choose having everything explained to me about a network’s international call, than getting a $122 bills like Spectrum did to me. Maybe, I am still very sore over the $122 charge for calling my parents. Hence, why I laid the facts about Mint international calls out here for you to make your own decision.

Personally, I do not think its international calling plan is bad. I am thinking about going back to Cricket, since it saved me a lot of money. I mean Cricket’s $15 international add-on to speak for hours, surely beats the $122 I had to pay on Spectrum international calls. Geez, I do not feel happy about paying $122 just for international calls. This is in addition to my phone bill and home wifi which are no longer $45 by the way!
